Things to See & Do

Discover the Gulf’s nature, history and culture

Karumba and the wider Carpentaria region offer much more than fishing. From wetlands teeming with birdlife to historic outback towns and magical natural phenomena like the Morning Glory Cloud or our rare 1 tide per day environment, there’s a world of adventure waiting.

Here are some of our favourite experiences.

Wildlife & Nature

Grab your binoculars and head to the Muttonhole Wetlands (between Karumba and Normanton) – a 9,000‑hectare park famous for birdwatching where whistling ducks, sarus cranes, brolgas, pelicans and jabirus congregate.

Closer to Karumba there are various ponds and water reserves from January to September in and around Karumba - easy to access- great for bird watching and exploring - truly Outback by the Sea.

Early risers can witness the Morning Glory cloud phenomenon, a rare rolling cloud that often appears between September and November.

Take in the Gulf’s famous sunsets and try stargazing after dark – the night skies here are spectacular. Walking trails link Karumba Point to Karumba town and provide a scenic 3.6 km stroll.

(Always be croc‑safe: swim only in the local pool and water park.)

History & Culture

In Karumba, discover the Flying Boat Base and A/B Block sites associated with Qantas and British Airways during the 1930s and learn about the town’s prawn‑fishing heritage at the Old Wharf

There are some 30 history and heritage signs around Karumba town area and Karumba Point you can either walk the trail or drive it.

The Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre is a must do when visiting Karumba - from organised tours of the hatchery to self guided walk throughs - there is so much to see and do - environment, local history, short films in the theatre, stories and history of the local fishing industry and lots more.

Or if staying longer take a trip to Normanton for the day - step back in time at the Burns Philp Building in Normanton, a heritage‑listed general store (1884) that now houses the visitor information centre and Indigenous Stock Workers and Rodeo Riders displays.

Visit the Bynoe Arts Centre to see contemporary and traditional art influenced by the natural environment.

Hop aboard the Gulflander Train – a working 1950 rail motor nicknamed the ‘Tin Hare’ – for a nostalgic journey between Croydon and Normanton, plus there are shorter trip options through the year - just check with Normanton Train Station.

Meet Krys the Savannah King, an 8.6‑metre saltwater croc replica in Normanton, and explore Camp 119, where the Burke & Wills expedition camped in 1861.

Tours & Cruises

Experience the Gulf by water on a sunset, birdwatching or croc‑spotting cruise – local operators offer a range of tours (ask us for recommendations).

If you’d like to fish, several charter operators can be arranged – bookings are best made in advance and for the very special experience you can book a helicopter scenic flight for aerial views of the Gulf or an amazing Heli-Fishing experience.

Events & Festivals

Time your visit with one of our regional events:

Sunday markets at Ash's Café (Easter to September), the Outback by the Sea Festival, Karumba Run Off Fishing Competition early in the year or our Karumba Anglers Classic later in the year, Normanton Rodeo and Camp draft, Stingers Bush Races, local Rugby league games, social bowls and local golf activities in both Karumba and Normanton and the annual Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride.
